Mexico - Magnitude 8.0 earthquake strikes off south west coast

An earthquake now reported to measure 8.0 has struck off the south west coast of Mexico causing significant shaking and triggering a tsunami warning.

The earthquake occurred late on Thursday (local time) was felt across much of Mexico and Guatemala.

Hazardous tsunami waves are possible within the next three hours along some coasts of Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama, Honduras and Ecuador. There is no immediate threat to the west coast of the USA or Canada.

There is no indication that there is a tsunami threat for the Pacific region at this time.

At this time there are no reports of serious damage, injury or death.  It is still early and the closest coastal areas may be without power as a result.
