Summary
Hurricane Lane is continuing to track westward in the Pacific Ocean south of Hawaii, Aug. 21. As of 0800 PDT Aug. 21, the system's center of circulation was approximately 725 km (450 miles) south-southeast of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. The latest forecast models indicate that Lane will gradually weaken over the coming days. Meteorologists project that the storm will start turning northwestward Aug. 22, making a close approach to and passing just to the west of the Hawaiian islands Aug. 23-26, possibly as a strong Category 2 or weak Category 3 hurricane.

Weather Warnings
As of early Aug. 21, hurricane watches are in effect for the islands of Maui, Lanai, Molokai, and Kahoolawe, as well as the Big Island. A hurricane watch is typically issued 48 hours before the expected impact of tropical-storm-force winds. Authorities will likely issue new alerts or extend/rescind active advisories as the extent and severity of Lane's potential impact becomes clearer.

Hazardous Conditions
Hurricane-force winds could begin affecting Hawaii and Maui counties Aug. 23, which could down trees, spread debris, damage infrastructure (including power lines), and/or impede access to important thoroughfares. Heavy rainfall associated with the system could trigger flooding or debris flows in high-risk areas. Business, transport, and utility disruptions are likely as Lane approaches Hawaii. Flight disruptions are likely at area airports, including Kona International Airport (KOA), Hilo International Airport (ITO), and Kahului Airport (OGG). Hazardous sea conditions will probably prompt the temporary suspension of ferry services and port operations.
