Australia - Cyclone Iris

3 Apr 2018

Tropical Cyclone Iris (17P) strengthened into a Category 2 system by early April 3. The system continues to track southeastward in the Coral Sea parallel to the central Queensland coastline. As of 1000, the storm's center of circulation was approximately 350 km (216 miles) east-southeast of Cairns. Models indicate the system's center will continue to stay well offshore; however, Iris is forecast to bring heavy rains and disruptive winds to parts of central eastern Queensland through at least April 4. Meteorologists predict the storm will make a turn towards the northeast April 6-7, at which point the system is not expected to pose a further threat to land as it moves deeper into the Coral Sea.

As of early April 3, the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has issued a tropical cyclone warning for Ayr to Sarina, including Mackay and the Whitsunday Islands, as well as adjacent inland areas. Officials also issued a tropical cyclone watch for Sarina to St. Lawrence. Heavy rainfall is likely in the affected areas through at least April 4. Models indicate accumulations of 5-10 cm (2-4 inches) are likely; localized amounts of 15 cm (6 inches) are possible. Downpours could produce flash and areal flooding. A flood watch is in effect for coastal catchments between Rollingstone and St. Lawrence. Strong winds are possible in coastal areas between Ayr and St. Lawrence through April 4. Powerful gusts could down trees and electrical poles, blocking roads and causing power outages. Flight delays are possible at regional airports, including those serving Townsville (TSV) and Mackay (MKY), through April 4.
