At least seven people died, and several others sustained injuries following a vehicular incident in Lower Manhattan, New York City, on October 31. A truck reportedly plowed into pedestrians and cyclists along the Hudson River Greenway, which runs parallel to West Street, near Chambers Street. The driver exited the vehicle near Stuyvesant High School and displayed a fake firearm; police shot the individual, who was subsequently taken into custody. The New York City Police Department (NYPD) has stated that no additional suspects are being sought. While authorities have not yet released a motive, the incident is being treated as a terror attack.
While there is no longer an active threat to the immediate area, a heightened police presence will continue into the evening hours in the Battery Park City and Tribeca areas of Lower Manhattan. The following road closures were in effect:
West Street:Closed in both directions between 34th Street and Chambers Street
FDR Drive:Southbound lanes closed at 34th Street; northbound lanes open
West 14th Street and West 23rd Street:Closed in both directions between East River and the Hudson River
Anticipate ongoing disruptions near the intersection of West Street and Chambers Street while the investigation into the incident continues.
