Italy - General Strike October 27 - Nationwide

25 Oct 2017

Several trade unions and labuor organizations nationwide called for a 24-hour national strike on October 27 to voice demands against government policies. Public and private sector aviation, maritime, rail, and local transportation workers are expected to participate. The strike action will likely disrupt bus, tram, and metro networks throughout metropolitan areas, regional rail lines, and airport operations. However, the disruptions are unlikely to be crippling because Italian law requires that a minimum level of service be maintained during weekday strikes. Specific walkouts by unionized workers include, but are not limited to, the following:

Public Transit Strikes
Bologna: Bus and tram strikes between 00:01 to 08:30 and 16:30 to 19:30. Train workers to strike between 06:00 to 09:00 and 1800 to 21:00
Bolzano: Reduced bus, tram, and subway services between 06:00 to 0900 and 12:00 to 15:00
Genoa: Bus and metro strike between 11:45 to 15:45
Milan: Service disruptions on public trams and buses between 08:45 to 15:00, and reduced Metro services between 18:00 to 23:59
Naples: Reduced bus, tram, and Metro services between 09:30 to 13:30
Turin: Bus and tram workers to strike between 10:30 to 14:30 and 15:00 to 19:00; Metro workers to strike between 16:00 to 20:00; workers on the Turin-Ceres and Canavesana railways to strike between 18:00 to 23:59

Rail Service Strikes
Short and long-haul routes on Trenord, Trenitalia, and Italo NTV freight and passenger train lines will likely be subject to delays, schedule changes, and/or cancellations from 21:00 on October 26 until 21:00 the following day on October 27. Replacement buses to airports will operate during the strike period.

Aviation Sector Strikes
Air traffic controllers associated with the National Flight Service Association (Enav) to strike between 13:00 to 17:00
Alitalia Airlines (AZ) unionized workers to strike for 24 hours at Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO)
Mistral Air (M4) flight crews to strike between 00:01 to 23:59
Ryanair (FR) pilots and flight attendants to strike between 14:00 to 18:00

Maritime Sector Strikes
Ferry services between the mainland, Sicily, and Sardinia will be affected between 00:01 and 23:59.

Public Sector Strikes
Employees at various medical facilities and public service halls will stage walkouts, though minimum services are guaranteed in emergency units. Emergency response personnel such as police and firefighters will not participate in the strike.

Demonstrations
The CUB transport, SGB, and SICobas unions will rally at 10:30 at the Italian Ministry of Economic Development building in Rome.

Expect widespread transport delays and possible cancellations. Disruptions could begin ahead of scheduled strike start times and linger past the stated end times. Public transit - including bus, tram, and Metro services - will also be affected throughout Italy, although the extent of disruptions will vary by city. Anticipate severe disruptions during morning and evening commutes, despite guaranteed minimum levels of service. Local ground transport disruptions could worsen if union members hold rallies in major cities coinciding with the general strike.
