Bali Travel Alert - IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings to Take Place in Bali, Oct. 8-14

27 Sep 2018

Authorities will step up security measures and deploy 26,000 security personnel across the island. Officials said they have not identified any terror threats ahead of the event but will continue to take precautions. Security personnel are likely to set up checkpoints and conduct random security checks, particularly in Nusa Dua. Security screening delays are likely at the entrances of major hotels hosting forum participants and event venues. Officials are also bolstering security at all entry points into Bali, including Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS).

Road closures and detours will be in place near the event venues in Nusa Dua, which will likely cause traffic and public transport disruptions. Officials have said that traffic restrictions will be imposed during the event's dinner reception at the Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) Cultural Park Oct. 12, when 2,500 delegates are expected to attend. Authorities are considering the implementation of odd-even licence plate driving policy restrictions in Bali during the meetings, though the restrictions have not been confirmed as of Sept. 25. Flight disruptions are possible at DPS; authorities may periodically close a runway for the arrival and departure of heads of state. State carrier Garuda Indonesia (GA) has announced that it will increase the number of flights at DPS during the IMF-World Bank meetings, which could result in flight delays. Tight security at DPS may also result in immigration and processing delays.

Rallies cannot be ruled out during the meetings. However, authorities are likely to prevent protesters from gathering near the event venues. Police could forcibly disperse demonstrations if protesters seek to break through security cordons; minor skirmishes are possible.
