Smart Traveller Reconsider your need to travel - Lombok Indonesia

8 Aug 2018

Reconsider your need to travel to Lombok, including the Gili Islands, following the powerful earthquake of 5 August 2018. The earthquake caused widespread damage to infrastructure and/or loss of life in North, West, Central, and East Lombok and the Gili Islands. Essential services are disrupted in many places. Emergency services and medical facilities are under strain. There is a risk of further aftershocks. Tourists are currently being evacuated from affected areas in north-east and west Lombok, and the Gili Islands. Many tourist facilities, including hotels and restaurants, are damaged or not operating. Indonesian authorities are focussed on immediate relief efforts in what has been a serious natural disaster. We will keep this advice under close review in consultation with Indonesian authorities.

The level of our advice for other regions of Indonesia, including Bali, has not changed: exercise a high degree of caution in Indonesia. Higher levels apply in Central Sulawesi and Papua provinces.
