Papua New Guinea - Smartraveller advice

Latest advice, 22 June 2018

We now advise you to reconsider your need to travel to Mendi in Southern Highlands Province. On 15 June 2018, PNG authorities declared a State of Emergency in Mendi, following civil unrest and violence. Authorities have deployed additional security resources to enforce law and order. Tensions between supporters of political candidates remain high and could turn violent without warning. Monitor local reports on security, avoid protests and follow the instructions of local authorities. Exercise a high degree of caution in PNG overall. Reconsider your need to travel into Tari in Hela Province and Porgera township in Enga Province in the northern highlands.
