Europe - Flight disruptions due to bad weather

11 Dec 2017

Moderate to heavy snowfall has led to major flight disruptions at airports serving London, UK (LHR, LTN, STN); Amsterdam, Netherlands (AMS); Zurich, Switzerland (ZRH); and Duesseldorf (DUS), Frankfurt (FRA), and Munich (MUC) in Germany on December 10. Numerous cancellations and significant delays are expected at these airports. Ground stops have been issued at DUS, FRA, and MUC, and these airports were not accepting arrivals until 1500, 1600, and 1700, respectively. As of the afternoon of December 10, European carriers had cancelled more than 1,000 flights in multiple countries; the majority were operated by Lufthansa (LH), Ryanair (FR), EasyJet (U2), KLM (KL), British Airways (BA), and Flybe (BE).

High winds and capacity issues have also been causing significant delays at Istanbul Ataturk Airport (IST) in Turkey.

Seek updated information on the status of flights, particularly if connecting through affected airports or making connections elsewhere after departing airports where delays are occurring. Confirm flights before checking out of hotels or departing for the airport; disruptions will likely continue into Dec. 11 as airlines reposition aircraft and flight crews to resume normal services.
