China - Severe Weather, Beijing

China's National Meteorological Administration (CMA) forecasts continued severe weather in and around Beijing through at least July 18. Authorities warn that the city may experience up to 11 cm (4.3 inches) of additional rainfall through 0800 July 18. The heaviest rainfall is likely from around 1200-2000 July 17, with up to 8 cm (3 inches) of rain per hour possible in some areas. Periodic thunderstorms may also occur. Regional weather conditions are expected to improve from early July 18. 

Parts of Beijing municipality received heavy rainfall from late July 15, causing urban flooding in some areas. Authorities have evacuated over 1,800 residents from flood-prone areas. Additional urban flooding may occur throughout Beijing. Mountainous areas could experience landslides during periods of severe weather. 

Localized flooding caused traffic disruptions in parts of Beijing July 16. Heavy rainfall also prompted hundreds of flight cancellations at Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK). Severe weather and flooding may lead to further ground and air transport disruptions in the coming days.
