Italy - Transport Strikes - Nationwide

5 Jun 2018

Unionized transport employees are planning various strike actions in Italy June 7-8. The following walkouts are expected to cause disruptions:

June 7

Rail: Staff employed by Trenitalia, Trenord, and Italo Ntv plan to walk out from 2200 June 7 - 0600 June 8.

June 8

Aviation: Unionized Air Traffic Controllers (ATCs) plan nationwide walkout 1300 - 1700 June 8. In addition, pilots and cabin crews employed by Blue Panorama (BV) and Air Italy (AEY) plan simultaneous walk-outs from 1300 - 1700.

Municipal Public Transport: Employees of public transport operators in Turin, Rome, and Verona plan to walk out for 24 hours June 8. Staff employed in other cities, including Milan and Naples, have also threatened strikes during the same period, though these have yet to be confirmed.

Transport strikes in Italy are often canceled at short notice, and their impact will vary by location. If the actions proceed, they will likely disrupt flights nationwide, as well as rail and public transport networks. Traffic congestion is also likely as commuters opt to use private vehicles. Residual flight and rail disruptions are possible after the strikes end as operators work to clear their backlogs.
