Cyclone Gita - Tonga

The worst of Cyclone Gita hit Tonga between 11pm and 2am Monday night (local time) as a Category 4 event with sustained winds up to 230km per hour (143 miles). There is considerable damage although at this stage no reported deaths or serious injury.  Many homes and buildings have been completely destroyed.

The main international airport in the capital of Niku'alofa is being assessed for damage and it is hoped that flights will resume later today.

People who are currently in Tonga should take care to avoid the damaged areas and follow the direction of local authorities.

Gita is now continuing to gather strength as the storm heads towards Fiji.  It is expected to impact the southern most islands of Fiji while the main islands will not be greatly affected.  This information will be updated if the situation changes.
