A magnitude-7.8 earthquake occurred in the western Caribbean Sea close to Great Swan Island, Honduras, at 20:51 CST on January 9. Significant damage is likely on islands close to the epicenter. Moderate to strong aftershocks are also likely.
The event has not prompted a region-wide tsunami warning, although minor sea level fluctuations are possible in coastal areas close to the epicenter.
A region-wide tsunami advisory has been issued for the Caribbean Basin, including the Caribbean coasts of Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, Costa Rica, and Panama. If a tsunami occurred, the first sea level changes could occur in the Cayman Island and Jamaica before 22:30 EST.
