China - Tropical Storm Mawar

4 Sep 2017

Tropical Storm Mawar continues to track northwestward in the East China Sea. The system is forecast to make landfall near Shanwei in Guangdong Province, about 100 km (62 miles) southwest of Shantou on September 4. China has activated a Level 3 (Yellow) typhoon warning for the areas of Guangdong and Fujian likely to be affected by Mawar.

The storm will bring heavy rain and wind to Guangdong Province, southern Fujian, and Hong Kong, China, as well as southwestern Taiwan. After making landfall, Mawar is projected to weaken rapidly and dissipate by late September 4 as it continues north toward Jiangxi and Hunan.

If the current forecast track holds, Mawar will produce coastal flooding in eastern Guangdong and southern Fujian. Rainfall totals of at least 25 cm (10 inches) are possible in the immediate landfall area, with amounts of 10-25 cm (4-10 inches) of rain in the areas of Guangdong, Fujian, Jinangxi, and Hunan provinces affected by the storm. Torrential rainfall and damaging winds are most likely in coastal areas near Shantou and Shanwei. Inland flooding is possible due to heavy rains. Telecommunications and power disruptions are likely, especially in areas near the storm's center. Strong winds and landslides could cause damage to infrastructure and will likely cause localized transportation disruptions.

Flight disruptions are likely at airports in Hong Kong, Guangdong, and southern Fujian. Jieyang Chaoshan International Airport (SWA), Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport (XMN), Hong Kong International Airport (HKG), Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN), and Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport (SZX) could suspend or limit operations through early September 3, or until the Mawar moves out of the area. Delays at key airports in the affected area may subsequently impact flights elsewhere across southern China.
