UK Entry Requirements for Australian–British and Australian–Irish Dual Citizens

16 Jan 2026

Australian–British and Australian–Irish dual citizens are required to enter the United Kingdom using their British or Irish passport, or via a certificate of entitlement in another valid passport.

Dual citizens cannot apply for or use a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) or visa to enter the UK. Attempting to travel on an Australian passport without the appropriate entitlement may result in travel disruption.

Travellers who do not hold the correct documentation may be refused boarding by airlines or denied entry upon arrival in the UK.

The UK Government has advised that these entry requirements will be strictly enforced from 25 February.

What UQ travellers should do

  • Ensure you are travelling on your British or Irish passport, or
  • Confirm you have a valid certificate of entitlement in your passport prior to departure
  • Check airline boarding requirements before travel

Travellers are strongly encouraged to review their documentation well in advance of departure to avoid delays or denied travel.

Entry and exit conditions can change at short notice. UQ travellers should check with nearest High Commission or Consulate of the United Kingdom before travelling.
